Number of electrons transferred in each ...

Number of electrons transferred in each case when `KMnO_(4)` acts as an oxidising agent to give `MnO_(2),Mn^(2), Mn(OH)_(3)` and `MnO_(4)^(2-)` are respectively:

A

3,5, 4 and 1

B

4, 3, 1 and 5

C

1,3, 4 and 5

D

5, 4, 3 and 1

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

`KMnO_(4)` has Mn in `+7` oxidation state. `MnO_(2)` has `+4` oxidation state so the electron change is 3, `Mn^(2+)` has 2 oxidation state so the change will be 5, `Mn(OH)_(3)` has `+3` oxidation state so the change would be 4 and `MnO_(4)^(2-)` has `+6` oxidation state hence the change is only 1.
