Compound 'A' (molecular formula C(3)H(8)...

Compound 'A' (molecular formula `C_(3)H_(8)O`) is treated with acidified potassium dichromate to form a product 'B' (molecular formula `C_(3)H_(6)O`)'B' forms a shining silver mirror on warming with ammoniacal silver nitrate 'B' when treated with an aqueous solution of `H_(2)NCONHNH_(2)` and sodium acetate gives a product 'C'. Identify the structure of 'C'

A

`CH_(3) CH_(2) CH = "NNHCONH"_(2)`

B

`CH_(3) - underset(CH_(3))underset(|)(C ) = "NNHCONH"_(2)`

C

`CH_(3) - underset(CH_(3))underset(|)(C ) = "NCONHNH"_(2)`

D

`CH_(3) CH_(2) CH = "NCONHNH"_(2)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

The compound A has to be n-propanol `(CH_(3) CH_(2)CH_(2)OH)` in this case as it will on oxidation with dichromate yield propanal which will successfully give a silver mirror test. Propanal being an aldehyde will undergo condensation with semicarbazide to form choice (1)
