Define equivalent mass of an oxidising agent
How would you calculate the equivalent mass of potassium permanganate?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The equivalent mass of an oxidizing agent is the number of parts by mass which can furnish 8 parts by mass of oxygen for oxidation
Potassium permanganate is an oxidizing agent.
`2KMNO_(4)+3H_(2)SO_(4)rarrK_(2)SO_(4)+2MnSO_(4)+3H_(2)O+5[O]`
80 parts by mass of oxygen are given by 316 g of `KMnO_(4)`
8 parts by mass of oxygen will be furnished by `316/80 xx 8=31.6`
Equivalent mass of `KMnO_(4)=31.6 g eq^(-1)`
