Beryllium halides are covalent whereas magnesium halides are ionic. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Beryllium ion `(Be^(2+))` is smaller in size and it is involved in equal sharing of electrons with halogens to form covalent bond, whereas magnesium ion `(Mg^(2+))` is bigger and it is involved in transfer of electrons to form ionic bond
