Which bond is stronger sigma or pi? Why ...

Which bond is stronger `sigma or pi`? Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Sigma bonds `(sigma)` are stronger than Pi bonds `(pi).` Because, sigma bonds are formed from bonding orbitals directly between the nuclei of the bonding atoms, resulting in greater overlap and a strong sigma bond (axial overlapping).
(ii) Pi bonds results from overlap of atomic orbitals that are in contact through two areas of Overlap (lateral overlapping). Pi bonds are more diffused bonds than sigma bonds.
