Explain the bond formation of hydrogen molecule.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

lectronic configuration of hydrogen atom is `1s^(1)`
uring the formation of `H_(2)` molecule, the ls orbitals of two hydrogen atoms containing one unpaired electron with opposite spin overlaps with each other along the internuclear axis. This overlap is called ss overlap. Such axial overlap results in the formation of a sigma `(sigma)` covalent bond.
