Identify the bond between H and F in HF ...

Identify the bond between H and F in HF molecule.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

lectronic configuration of hydrogen atom is `1_(s)^(1)`.
Valence shell electronic configuration of fluorine atom is `2s^(2)" "2p_(x)^(2)" "2p_(y)^(2)" "2p_(z)^(1)`
When half iled 1ls orbital of hydrogèn linearly overlaps with a half filled `2p_(z)` orbital of fluorine, a `sigma` covalent bond is formed between hydrogen and fluorine.
