An acid is defined as a substance which on dissolution in water furnishes `H^(+)` ions as the only positively charged ions. A base is defined as a substance which on dissolution in water furnishes `OH^(-)` ions as the only negatively charged ions.
Examples of acids: `HC1 rarr H^(+) + C1^(-)`
`HNO_(3) rarr H^(+) + NO_(3)^(-)`
Examples of bases: `NaOH rarr Na^(+) + OH^(-)`
`KOH rarr K^(+) + OH^(-)`
