A cylindrical body of area of cross section `100 cm^(2)` and length 20 cm is immersed in a liquid whose density is `1.5 g cm^(-3)`. If the density of the solid is `2 g cm^(-3)`, calculate the upthrust acting on the body.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Upthrust (F)=Vdg
Where V=volume of the liquid displaced by the cylinder = the volume of the cylinder itself.
`therefore V=Al`
`=100 cm^(2) xx20 cm`
`=2000 cm^(3)`
`F=2000 cm^(3) xx 1.5 g cm^(-3) xx980 cm s^(-2)`
=294000 dyne
F=29.4 N
