Write the chemical equation for Williamson synthesis of 2-ethoxy -2- methyl pentane starting from ethanol and 2-methyl pentan-2-ol.

Text Solution

Williamson synthesis :
Step 1 : `underset("Ethanol")(CH_3CH_2OH) underset((or) PBr_3)overset(HBr//Delta)(rarr) underset("Ethyl bromide")(CH_3-CH_2-Br) + H_2O`
Step 2 : `underset(2-"methyl-pentan-2-ol")underset(CH_3)underset(|)overset(OH)overset(|)(C )-CH_2-CH_2-CH_3 overset(Na-"metal")(rarr) 2CH_3-underset("Sodium alkoxide")underset(CH_3)underset(|) overset(ONa)overset(|)(C )-CH_2-CH_2-CH_3 + H_2 uarr`
Step 3 :
Williamsons synthesis occurs by `SN^2`- mechanism and primary alkyl halides are more reactive in `SN^(2)` reactions. Therefore ethanol is converted into ethyl bromide.
