Why aluminium cannot be extracted by reducing alumina with carbon?

Alumina`(Al_(2)O_(3))` cannot be reduced by using carbon because aluminum has more affinity for oxygen than carbon.Therefore,aluminium cannot be extracted by reducing alumina with carbon.
