Write a note on zeolites.

Explanation

Zeolites:
(i) Zeolites are three dimensional crysatalline solids containing aluminium, silicon and oxygen in the their three dimensioinal frame work.
(ii) They are hydrated sodium alumino silicates with general formula,
`Na_(2)O.(Al_(2)O_(3)).x(SiO_(2))y(H_(2)O)`
(x=2 to 10 , y =2 to 6)
(iii) Zeolites have porous structures in which the monovalent sodium ions and water molecules are loosely held.
(iv) The Si and Al atoms are tetrahedrally coordinated with each other through shared oxygen atoms.
(v)Zeolites structure looks like a honey comb consisting of a network of interconnected tunnels and cages.
(vi) Zeolite crystal to act a molecular sieve. The helps to remove permanent hardness of water.
