A polarized light of intensity I(0) is ...

A polarized light of intensity `I_(0)` is passed through another polarizer whose pass axis makes an angle of `60^(@)` with the pass axis of the former. What is the intensity of polarized light from second polarizer ?

A

`I=I_(0)//5`

B

`I=I_(0)`

C

`I_(0)//4`

D

`I=I_(0)//6`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

According to Malus' law, the intensity of emergent polarized light from second polarizer is
`I=I_(0)cos^(2)theta`
where `theta` is the angle between pass axes of two polarizers and `I_(0)` is the intensity of polarized light after passing through the first polarizer.
Here, `theta=60^(@)`
`:.I=I_(0)cos^(2)60^(@)=I_(0)(1/2)^(2)+(I_(0))/(4)`
