A metal X is 16 times as dense as matal Z and metal Y is 7 times as dense as metal Z . In what ratio should X and Y be mixed to get an alloy12 times as dense as metal Z?

A

` 2 : 3`

B

` 5 : 2`

C

` 5 : 4`

D

` 6 : 5`

The correct Answer is:
C

(i) Let the required ratio be x : 1 .
(ii) Let the density of metal z be k.
`:. ` Density of metal x = 16 k and that of y = 7k.
(iii) Let the required ratio be m : 1.
(iv) (16k) m+(7k) 1=(m+1) 12k, solve this for m.

Metals X and Y can be recovered from the anode mud left behind after the electrolytic refining of copper metal. The coins made of metal X look new even after several years of use but the coins made of metal Y lose their shine gradually and get blackened soon. when metal X is alloyed with a small amount of metal Y, it becomes hard and hence suitable for making ornaments. what are metals X and Y? Also state the colour of metal X.

A strip of metal X is dipped in the blue coloured salt solution YSO_(4) . After some time, a layer of metal Y from the salt solution is formed on the surface of metal strip.
