Applications of graphite
(i) Pencil leads are manufactured by mixing graphite with clay.
(ii) Graphite mixed with fine clay is moulded and sintered into crucibles of desired size and shape which are used to melt small quantities of metals.
(iii) It is also used as an excellent lubricant in those parts of the machineries where high heat is generated due to friction.
(iv) Graphite is used in electrolytic cells as electrodes.
(v) Graphite is used in nuclear reactor as a moderator to slow down the neutrons produced due to the splitting of the atoms or thorium.
