Both fats and carbohydrates are energy giving food nutrients and both contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, but the molecular structure of fat is more complex than that of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates breaks down to form carbon dioxide and water and water and releases energy. Combustion of fat takes a long period of time and hence carbohydrates are preferable to fats. Fats are considered as reservoirs of energy while carbohydrates serve serve as instant source of energy.

Each packet of the same quantity of food Q contains 3 units of calcium, 20 units of iron, 4 units of cholesterol and 3 units of vitamin A. The diet requires atleast 240 units of calciums atleast 460 units of iron and at most 300 units of cholesterol. How many packets of each food should be used to minimise the amount of vitamin A in the diet? What is the minimum amount of vitamin A? How many packets of each food should be used to maximise the amount of vitamin A in the diet? What is the maximum amount of vitamin A in the diet?

All living cells require energy for various activities. This energy is available by the breakdown of simple carbohydrates either using oxygen or without using oxygen. Study the graph below that represents the amount of energy supplied with respect to the time while an athlete is running at full speed.
