Why is `K_(a_(2)) lt lt K_(a_(1))` for `H_(2)SO_(4)` in water ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`H_(2)SO_(4)` is a very strong acid in water largely because of its first ionisation to `H_(3)O^(+)` and `HSO_(4)^(-)` The ionisation of `HSO_(4)^(+)` to `H_(3)O^(+)` and `SO_(4)^(2-)` is very very small. That is why `K_(a_(2))lt ltK_(a_(1))`.
