Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. Certain words are printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some of these. Good Food is First Food. It is not junk food. It is the food that connects nature and nutrition with livelihoods. This food is good for our health, it comes from the rich _________(A)____________ of our regions, it provides employment to people. Most importantly, cooking and eating it gives us pleasure. In 2013, we had published the first edition of First Food series. I had written then that food is about culture and biodiversity. We often do not think that food diversity, indeed cultural diversity, is linked to the diversity in the biological world. We argued then that we must celebrate the knowledge of plants and their properties and how best to cook them to bring out the flavours and smells. We said then — and we are saying again now — that only when we value the biodiversity on our plates, will we be able to protect the biodiversity in the wild. In 2017 came the second edition First Food: Culture of Taste. In this book, as in the first, we offered recipes of foods along with the knowledge of plant diversity. We did this because it was becoming clear the world was (and is) facing an obesity pandemic — much of the food we eat today is bad for health, with no nutrition or goodness. More importantly, it is now clear that this change in our diet — moving away from home-cooked, nutritious foods borne out of culinary traditions and age-old knowledge — is not incidental or accidental. We are children of the age of processed and factory- grown foods, who have been trans- mutated through a deliberate and subliminal marketing that has changed our habits and our culture of food. We need a re-discovery of this knowledge of food and culture. All is not lost yet — we still eat home-cooked, bio-diverse and nutritious food. But this scenario is changing rapidly. Already, there is evidence that the incidence of diabetes — a disease with strong links to bad food — is increasing, not just among the affluent but also the poor of urban India. Which of the following word can fill the blank (A) in the first paragraph of the passage?

To what extent, though, are modern farming methods sustainable? There is abundant evidence that a high price has to be paid to sustain the high rates of food production achieved by farmed, monocultures. For example, they offer ideal conditions for the epidemic spread of diseases such as mastitis, brucellosis and swine fever among livestock and coccidiosis among poultry. Farmed animals are normally kept at densities far higher than their species would meet in nature with the result that disease transmission rates are magnified. In addition, high rates of transmission between herds occur as animals are sold from one farming enterprise to another, and it is easy for the farmers themselves, with mud on their boots and their vehicles, to act as vectors of pests and disease. With reference to the passage, consider the following statements : 1. The modern practices of farming are undesirable for developing countries. 2. Monoculture practices should be given up to eliminate disease transmission in animals. Which of the above statements is/are correct?

Read the following statements and select the correct option. Statement 1 : Zoological parks are the places where wild animals are kept in protected environments under human care and which enable us to learn about their food habits and behavior. Statement 2 : Adequate arrangements for the treatment, medication, regular check up and pathological investigations are absolutely necessary to be made for the health, care and upkeep of the animals.

(ii) Ris considered as connecting link between plants and animals. (iii) Q and S are parasites which live in the bodies of other organisms including human beings. (iv) R and S bear chlorophyll and prepare food in the presence of sunlight. (v) S is colonial form of algae.

Which of the following statements is/are not correct regarding connective tissues ? (i) They are most abundant and widely distributed in the body of complex animals (ii) They connect and support other tissues (iii) They include diverse tissues such as bones, cartilage, tendons, adipose and other loose connective tissues. (iv) They form the internal and external lining of many organs (v) In all connective tissues except blood, the cells secrete fibres of structural proteins like collagen and elastin.

You have two passages with 5 questions following each passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer to each question out of the four alternatives and mark it by blackening the appropriate oval in the Answer Sheet. PASSAGE-1 The public distribution system, which provides food at low prices, is a subject of vital concern. There is a growing realization that though India has enough food to feed its masses two square meals a day, the monster of starvation and food insecurity continues to haunt the poor in our country. Increasing the purchasing power of the poor through providing productive employment leading to rising income, and thus good standard of living, is the ultimate objective of public policy. However, till then, there is a need to provide assured supply of food through a restructured, more efficient and decentralized public distribution system (PDS). Although the PDS is extensive - it is one of the largest such systems in the world - it hasn.t reached the rural poor and the remote places. It remains an urban phenomenon, with the majority of the rural poor still out of its reach due to lack of economic and physical access. The poorest in the cities and the migrants are left out, for they generally do not possess ration cards. The allocation of PDS supplies in big cities is larger than in rural areas. In view of such deficiencies in the system, the PDS urgently needs to be streamlined. Also, considering the large food grains production combined with food subsidy on one hand and the continuing slow starvation and dismal poverty of rural population on the other, there is a strong case for making PDS target group oriented. By making PDS target group oriented, not only the poorest and the neediest would be reached without additional cost but we can also reduce the overall costs incurred. The public distribution system, which provides food at ...................... .is a subject of vital concern.
