N. Bartlett observed that the first ionization enthalpy of molecular oxygen is almost identical with that of xenon. So after preparing red coloured compound `O_2^+PtF_6^(-)` he nrnde efforts to prepare `Xe^+ptF_6^(-)` by mixing PtF6 and Xe.
