(i) Carbylamine reaction : Aliphatic and aromatic primary amines on heating with chloroform and ethanolic potassium hydroxide form isocyanides or carbylamines which are foul smelling substances .
`R-NH_(2) +CHCl_(3) + 3KOH overset("Heat")(to)R-NC- + 3KCl + 3H_(2)O`
(ii) Hofmann's bromamide reaction : The conversations of a primary amide to a primary amine containing one carbon atom less than the original amide on heating with a mixture of `Br_(2)` in presence of NaOH or KOH ,i.e., NaOBr is called Hofmann's bromamide reaction .
`underset("Acetamide")(CH_(3)CONH_(2)) + Br_(2) + 4NaOH overset(Delta)(to) underset("Methylamine")(CH_(3)NH_(2)+) + 2NaBr + Na_(2)CO_(3) + 2H_(2)O`
