Explain the following :
(i) Low spin octahedral complexes of nickel are not known.
(ii) The `pi` - complexes are known for transition elememts only.
(iii) CO is a stroger ligand than `NH_(3)` for many metals.

Text Solution

(i) For ocahedral complexes , coordination number should be 6. Since , the electronic configuration of Ni is `[Ar] 3d^(8)4s^(2)`. Which can only form the tetrahedral complexes.
(ii) Transition metals/ ions have empty d- orbitals into which the electron - pair can be donated ligands containing `pi` electrons. For example `CH_(2)=CH_(2),C_(5)H_(5)andC_(6)H_(6)`,etc.
CO and `NH_(3)` both are unidentate ligand . But CO is stronger ligand than `NH_(3)` due its large size.

Why are pi-"complexes" known for transition metals only?

Explain the following given appropriate reason: i) Nickel does not form low spin octahedral complexes. ii) The pi -complexes are known for the transition metals only. iii) Co^(2+) is easily oxidised to Co^(3+) in the presence of a strong ligand.

Explain the following: (i) All the octahedral complexes of Ni^(2+) must be outer orbital complexes. (ii) [CoF_(6)]^(3-) is paramgnetic but [Co(CN)_(6)]^(3-) is diamagnetic .

From four transition metal octahedral complexes , (the choice given below) low spin electronic configuration arises only for
