Name the organism from which the 'cry' genes are isolated. Mention with the help of suitable example why and how bio-technologists have made use of 'cry' genes.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The 'cry genos' were isolated from Bacillus thuringiensis and incorporated into the several crop plants such as cotton.
The choice of genes depends upon the crop and the targeted pest, as most Bt toxins are insect group specific. The toxin is coded by gene named 'cry'. There are no. of them.
For example, the proteins encoded by the genes by the genes cry IAC and cry II Ab control the cotton bollworms and cry IAC controls worn borer.
