The tendency to exhibit -3 oxidation sta...

The tendency to exhibit `-3` oxidation state by a group VA element decreases down the group. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitrogen exhibits `-3` state in nitride and phosphorus exhibits `-3` state in phosphide. Going down the group, the atomic size increases and metallic character also increases. Hence, the tendency to exhibit negative oxidation state decreases down the group VA
