The distance between the centres of carbon and oxygen atoms in the carbon monoxide molecule is `1.130Å` . Locate the centre of mass of the molecule relative to the carbon atom .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mass of carbon atom, `m_(1)=12` amu Distance of carbon atom relative to oxygen atom, `x_(1)=1.13Å`
Mass of oxygen atom, `m_(2)=16` amu
Taking origin at oxygen atom
Distance of oxygen atom relative to oxygen atom, `x_(2)=0`
The position of centre of mass is:
`X_(cm)=(m_(1)x_(1)+m_(2)x_(2))/(m_(1)+m_(2))=(12xx1.13+16xx0)/(12+16)`
`=0.484Å` from the O-atom.
