Prove that in charging a capacitor half ...

Prove that in charging a capacitor half of the energy supplied by the battery is stored in the capacitor and remaining half is lost during charging.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When a battery with potential difference V is connected across a capacitor with capacitance C then charge supplied by the battery is CV. Work done by the battery is charge supplied by the battery multiplied with potential difference of battery and hence, `CV^(2)`. As we know, that energy stored in capacitor is `(1)/(2)CV^(2)`, so the remaining half of energy supplied by the battery is lost as heat. Hence, energy stored in a capacitor is the same as heat loss during its charging.
