Why are electric field lines perpendicular at a point on an equipotential surface of a conductor ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If the electric field lines are not normal to the surface, then the electric field will have a non-zero component along the surface. Therefore, the external agent needs to do work in order to move a charged particle on this surface, which is against the property of equipotential surfaces.
