GEOMETRICAL LENGTH AND MAGNETIC LENGTH

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The magnetic length is a little less than the geometric length of a magnet. It is approximately 6/7 of the geometric length but in most of the cases we use geometric length same as magnetic length. If we dip a bar magnet completely into iron filings, and then take it out, we will see that a large amount of iron filings will be closer to poles of the magnet, which is slightly inside the end points of the magnet.

The product of the length of the magnet and its pole strength is called the moment of a magnet or Magnetic moment. If 'm' is the pole strength and 2l is the length of the magnet then, the moment of the magnet or Magnetic moment is given by. M =m xx 2l . Also, Magnetic moment is a vector quantity, with its direction from south pole to north pole along its axial line.
