How do we know that the direction of magnetic field of the earth changes with time?

On a careful analysis, the magnetization of rocks due to the earth.s magnetism indicates that the intensity as well as the direction of magnetic field change with time. But the time interval of change is huge, so one may not observe any noticeable change in his/her lifespan.
