The core of a transformer is made of magnetic material of high permeanbility. Why ?

High permeability of a core material implies that the magnetic lines of force due to current in the coil remain mostly confined to the cure. This prevents the induction of stray currents in the nearby conductors. Thus, the power loss and flux leakage are minimised and the efficiency of the transformer is increased.
