The earth's field, it is claimed, roughly approximates the field due to a dipole of magnetic moment `8xx10^(22)JT^-1` located at its centre. Check the order of magnitude of this number in some way.

Using the formula for magnetic field B on the normal bisector of a dipole of magnetic moment M.
`B = (mu_0)/(4pi) (M)/(r^3)`
here , ` M = 8 xx 10^22 JT^(-1) , r = 6.4 xx 10^6 m`
`rArr B = 0.3 G`
It is comparable with the order of magnitude of the observed field on the earth.
