Define magnetic susceptibility of a mate...

Define magnetic susceptibility of a material.Name two elements one having positive susceptibility and the other having negative susceptibility. What does negative susceptibility signify?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The ratio of intensity of magnetization (I) to the magnetising force (H) is magnetic susceptibility x of a material `x = I//H`
Iron and nickel have positive susecptibility
Copper and silver have negative susceptibility .
Negative value of susceptibility implies that the material is diamagnetic and weakly magnetised in a direction opposite to the applied field.
