Why is the orientation of the portable radio with respect tp broadcasting station important?

Since the electromagnetic waves emitted from a broadcast station are plane polarised it is important that the orientation of the receiving antenna is paralllel to either the electric or the magnetic part of the wave os that it can be received properly by our portable radio .
