Two beams of light having intensities I ...

Two beams of light having intensities I and 4I interface to produce a fringe pattern on a screen. The phase difference between the beams is `(pi)/(2)` at point A and `pi` at point B. Then the difference between the resultant intensities at A and B is

A

`2 I`

B

`4 I `

C

`5 I `

D

`7 I`

The correct Answer is:
B

Resultant intensity can be written as follows:
`I. = I_1 + I_2 + 2sqrt(I_1 I_2) cos delta`
We can used the above relation to calculate intensities at points A and B as follows:
`I_A = I + 4I + 2sqrt(I xx 4I) cos pi/2 = 5I`
similarly
`I_B = I + 4I + 2sqrt(I xx 4I)cos pi = 5I - 4I = I`
`I_A - I_B = 4I`
