Unpolarised light of intensity I0 is pas...

Unpolarised light of intensity `I_0` is passed through a polaroid A, and intensity of light after passing polaroid A becomes `I_1`. Light emerging from polaroid A is passed through another polaroid B, whose axis is inclined at an angle `60^@` with the axis of A. Intensity of light after emerging from B becomes `I_2`.

A

`I_1 = 0`

B

`I_1 = I_0//2`

C

`I_2 = I_0//4`

D

`I_2 = I_0//8`

The correct Answer is:
B, D

We need the law of Malus to answer this question.
`I = I_0 cos^2 theta`
For unpolariod light all possible values of `theta` are there and hence we take average of `cos^2 theta = 1//2` Hence `I_1 = I_0//2`.
Further we can use same law to calculate `I_2` as follows:
`I_2 = I_1 cos^2 60 = (I_0)/2 xx 1/4 = (I_0)/8`.
