Obtain the binding energy (in MeV) of a ...

Obtain the binding energy (in MeV) of a nitrogen nucleus `(""_(7)^(14)N)` , given `m(""_(7)^(14)N)`
`=14.00307" "u`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Here, atomic number, Z=7 and
Atomic mass, A=14,
Number of neutrons, N=A-Z
= 14-7=7
Mass defect is given by
`wedgem =(Zm_(11) + Nm_(n)-M) = (7 xx 1.007825 + 7 xx 1.008665- 14.00307)u`
`=(7.054775 + 7.060655 - 14.00307)u = 0.11236` u
Since 1u `=931.5 MeV//c^(2)`
`therefore` Binding energy of `""_(7)N^(14) = Deltamc^(2)`
`=0.11243 xx 931.5 MeV = 104.7 MeV`
