A tunning fork of frequency 500 Hz is sounded on a resonance tube. The first & second resonances are obtained at 17 cm and 52 cm. The velocity of sound in m/s :

A

170

B

350

C

520

D

850

The correct Answer is:
B

v = 500 Hz, `l_(1) = 17 cm , l_(2) = 52 ` cm.
Now `l_(2) - l_(1) = lambda//2 " " rArr lambda = 2 (52 - 17) = 70 ` cm Now v = v `lambda = 500 xx 0.7 = 350 ms^(-1)`.
hence correct choice is (b) .
