Two whistles A & B produces notes of frequencies 660 Hz and 596 Hz respectively. There is a listener at the middle point of the line joining them. Both the whistles B and the listener start moving with speed 30 m/s away from the whistle A. If speed of sound be 330 m/s, how many beats will be heard by the listener ?

A

2

B

4

C

D

The correct Answer is:
B

Since B and listener are moving with same velocity the frequency of note from B remains unchanged, freq. of note from A will be
`f_(A) = (330 - 30)/(330 - 0) xx 660 `
= 600 Hz.
Beat freq. = 600 - 596 = `4s^(-1)`.
correct choice is (b).

A train standing in a station yard, blows a whistle of frequency 400 Hz in still air. The wind starts blowing in the direction from the yard to the station with a s speed of 10ms^(-1) . What are the frequency , wavelength and speed of sound for an observer standing on the station's platform? Is the situation exactly identical to the case when the air is still and the observer runs towards the yard at a speed of 10 ms^(-1) ? The speed of sound in still can be taken as 340 ms^(-1)

Two cars are approaching each other on a straight road and moving with a velocity of 60 kmph. If the sound produced in one car is of frequency 500 Hz, what will be the frequency of sound as heard by a person sitting in another car ? When the car has crossed and moving away from each other , what will be the frequency of sound as heard by the same period ? (speed of sound in air is 332 ms^(-1) )
