Mixture of sodium chloride and ammonuium chloride are taken in a flat basin and a funnel is inverted over it. The outer surface of the funnel is wrapped with a water soaked filter paper and the open end of the stem of the funnel is plugged with a piese of paper cotton to stop the passge of any vapour. The basin is kept in a sand bath. The sand bath is placed over a wire mesh kept on a tripod stand and then is heated gently with the help of Bunsed burner.
A white coloured fume is observed which condenses as white powdery substance when it comes in contact with colder wall of the funnel. The process of heating is continued till the evolution of white vapour is observed.
Since ammonium chloride is a sublimable substance, it sublimes and then condenses as white powder. The substance left over on the basin is sodium chloride which does not sublime. Ammonium chloride is scrapped off from the walls of the funnel and thus the mixture separated.
