The rate of evaporation depends upon the nature of the liquid. In case of alcohol, the surface molecules possess high kinetic energy as a result they easily escape into atmosphere that is the of evaporation is more. As evaporation causes cooling, decrease in temperature in case of alcohol is more. Due to this reason, a decrease in the level of mercury is observed in the case observed in the case of container B having alcohol but not in the case of A having water.

Two thermometers A and B are calibrated in different scales. When both the termometers are placed in a container filled with hot water the mecury thread in the thermometer A has mvoed through divisions whereas the mercury thread in thermometer B has moved though 15 divisions. The reading on thermometers A and B are 20^(@) and 40^(@) , respectively. if the lower fixed point fo the thermometer A is 0^(@) , determinet he lowe fixed pointt of the thermometer B.
