Which of the following species will have...

Which of the following species will have the largest and the smallest size `Mg, Mg^(2+), Al, Al^(3+)`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atomic radii decrease across a period. So, Mg will have larger size than Al. Cations are smaller than their parent atoms. So size is: `Mg ^(2+) lt Mg and Al ^(3) lt Al.` Now, among isoelectronic ions, thte ion with the larger positive nuclear charge will have a smaller radius i.e., size is `Al 6(3+) lt Al.`
Hence, the largest species is Mg
the smallest species is `Al ^(3+)`
