Using the perodic table, perdict the formulas of compounds which might be formed by the following pairs of elements : (a) silicon and bromine (b) aluminium and sulphur.

(i) Silicon belongs to grop having a valence of 4 and bromine elongs to group 17 (halogen family) with a valence of 1. Therefore, the formula of compound formed would be `SiBr _(2).`
(ii) Aluminium belongs to group 13 with a valence of 3 while sulphur belongs to group 16 with a valence of 2. Hence, the formulae of the compounds formed would be `Al _(2)S_(3).`
