Explain why pure liquids and solids can ignored while writing the equilibrium constant expression?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

For the concentration of pure solid or pure liquid,
[Solid ] or [liquid]= `"No. of moles"/"Volume in L"`
`="Mass /Molar mass"/"Volume"`
`="Mass"/"Volume" xx 1/"Molar mass"`
`="Density"/"Molar mass"`
Since density of pure solids and liquids is constant at constant temperature and molar mass is also constant, therefore, their molar concentrations are constant and are not included in the equilibrium constant.

Concentration of pure solid and liquid is not included in the expression of equilibrium constant because

Assertion: No term in the concentration of a pure solid or a pure liquid apperas in an equilibrium constant expression. Reason: Each pure solid or pure liquid is in a phase by itself and has a constant concentration at constant temperature.

The concentration of a pure solid or liquid phase is not include in the expression of equilibrium constant becase :
