What is the advantage of using antihistamines over antacids in the treatment of acidity ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Antacids neutralise the acids produced in the stomach. They do not control the cause of production of excess acid. Therefore , anticids control only the symptoms but not the cause. On the other hand, antihistamines are the drugs which suppress the action of histamine which is the chemical responsible for stimulation of secretion of pepsin and HCl in the stomach . These influence and prevent the binding of histamine with the receptors present in the stomach wall resulting in lower acid production and therefore , better treatment . This is the advantge of antihistamines over antcids .
