Why are detergents non - biodegradable while soap are biodegradable ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Common detergents have brached hydrocarbon chains which are either not attacked or attacked only very slow by bacteria . As a result , the detergents are not degraded . On the other hand , soaps have unbranched hydrocarbon chain which are easily degreaded by bacteria present in the sewage water and hence do not cause water pollution .
