If the numerically smaller root of x^(2)...

If the numerically smaller root of `x^(2) + mx = 2` is 3 more than the other one, find the value of m.

A

`-1`

B

1

C

-2

D

2

The correct Answer is:
B

The difference of the roots of `ax^(2) + bx+ c = 0`
`(sqrt(b^(2)- ac))/(a)` for `a gt 0`.
`:.` For `x^(2) + mx - 2 = 0`. It is `sqrt(m^(2) + 8) = 3`
`rArr m = +-1` .
That is, the equation could be `x^(2) + x - 1 = 0` or `x^(2) -x-2 = 0`.
The roots are `-2,1` or `-1,2`.
As the numberically smaller root is greater, the roots are `-2, 1` and `m = 1`.
