How does a gap junctions facilitate intercellular communication ?

Gap junctions are microscopic tunnels between the adjacent animal cells. These help in intercellular communication by rapid transfer of ions, small biomolecules and rarely large biomolecules between the cytoplasm of adjacent cells.
