In mammals, blood platelets are present. These are smallest sized (2-3 `mu` m), oval-shaped, cytoplasmic fragments of giant-sized megakaryocytes of bone marrow. Their normal count is 150,000-300,000 per `"mm"^(3)`. These play an important role in blood clot formation at the injury. These rupture and release a number of platelet factors and an enzyme throm-bokinase which are essential for coagulation of blood. A marked decrease in their number (e.g. in dengue fever) causes clotting disorder and excessive bleeding.
