A photon and an elecron have the same de Broglie wavelength. Which has greater total energy? Explain

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

For a photon. Energy, `E_(1) =hv = (hc)/lambda`……..(i)
For an electron, moving with velocity v and effective mass m, the de-Broglie wavelength is given by
`lambda = h/(mv)` or `m=h/(lambda v)`
Total energy of the electron, `E_(2) = mc^(2) =(h/(lambdav))c^(2)`............(ii)
From (i) and (ii), we have
`E_(2)/E_(1) =(h/(lambdav))c^(2) xx lambda/(hc) =c/u gt 1`
`therefore E_(2) gt E_(1)` , thus electron has total energy greater than that or photon.
