Two towers on top of two hills are 40 km apart. The line joining them passes 50 m above a hil halfway between the towers. What is the longest wavelength of radio waves, which can be sent between the towers without appreciable diffraction effects?

`d sin theta = nlamda, lamda =(d sin theta)/n`
`OT_(1)=OT_(2)=20km=20xx10^(3)m`
For longest wavelength `n=1` and `sin theta~~theta~~tan theta`
`:. Lamda=(d . tan theta)/1=d.tan theta=50xx(HO)/(OT_(2))`
`=(50xx50)/(20xx10^(3))=/8m = 100/8cm=12.5cm`

Two point sources of sound are kept at a separation of 10 cm. They vibrate in phase to produce waves of wavelength 5.0 cm. What would be the phase difference between the two waves arriving at a point 20 cm from one source (a) on the line joining the sources and (b) on the perpendicular bisector of the line joining the sources ?

From the top of a lighhouse, the angles of depression of two ships on the opposite sides of it are observed to be 30^(@) and 60^(@) . If the height of the lighthouse is h meters and thhe line joining the ships passes through the foot of the lighthouse. show that the distance between the ships is (4h)/(sqrt(3)) m.

Two friends A and B are standing a distance x apart in an open field and wind is blowing from A to B. A beats a drum and B hears the sound t_1 timed after he sees the event. A and B interchange their positions and the experiment is repeated. The velocity of sound in still air is v and the velocity of wind is u . This time B hears the drum t_2 time after he sees the event. Suppose A and B change their positions in such a way that the line joining them becomes perpendicular to the direction of wind while maintaining the separation x . What will be the time lag B finds between seeing and hearing the drum beating by A?

Figure shows an aluminium wire of length 60 cm joined to a steel wire of length 80 cm and stretched between two fixed supports. The tension produced is 40 N . The cross-sectional area of the steel wire is 1.0 mm^(2) and that of the aluminimum wire is 3.0 mm^(2) The minimum frequency of a tuning fork which can produce standing waves in the system with the joint as a node is 10P (in Hz ) the find P . Given density of aluminimum is 2.6 g//cm^(3) and that of steel is 7.8 g//cm^(3) .
