Write the expression for rms speed, average speed and most probable speed of a gas molecule.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Root mean square speed : `(nu_(rms))`
`nu_(rms)=sqrtoverlinenu^(2)=sqrt(3kT)/m=1.73sqrt(kT)/m`
Average Speed : `overlinenu`
`overlinenu=(nu_(1)+nu_(2)+nu_(3)+.....nu_(n))/N`
`overlinenu=sqrt((8RT)/(Mpi))=sqrt((8kT)/(pim))=1.60sqrt(kT)/m`
Most probable speed: `V_(mp)`
`nu_(mp)=sqrt((2RT)/(M))=sqrt((2kT)/(m))=1.41sqrt(kT)/m`
